Past

Bain's father was one of the first faeries that Irial--the very first of their kind--brought into existence. He was born from the blood that fell from the throats Irial had cut opened. His father told him stories about those early days, and those where the days that their kind had to prove the world that they were not a force to take lightly--let alone messed with. Their point was eventually proven, but not without a lot of blood shed. However, the world now knew that faeries were nature's protector and will slaughter anyone whom have ill intent towards their charge. His father did not share these stories to make his son understand his duty. There was no need for that. Bain--just like every fae--are born with the knowledge they nature protectors. It is an instinct. No, it is more than that. It a reflex---much like breathing.

His father shared these stories with Bain to tell him that he has to prove himself to the world. The world isn't going to take his word that he is everything he says he is, and he will have to prove it. This will be hard, but if he is willing to endure this hardship he will eventually show the world the truth of whom he is. He might even surprise himself. He might discover through all this that he is a very different person than he originally thought. Bain's mother, on the other hand, came into being years after his father. However, like his father, Bain's mother was born from blood. It wasn't the blood of those whom wished harm to the forest the faeries called home, but rather the blood of one of their own that gave birth to her. It was the blood of her own mother.

His grandmother had been queen of the winter court, and she knew that her reign was coming to an end. She did not know how much time she had, but she hoped to find her successor before her end came upon her so she could help her understand what it meant to be queen, but death would find her before that came to pass. However, it turned out that she had been pregnant with her successor. It had been too early into the pregnancy for even his grandmother to be aware of, and if the universe haven't decided that child was meant to be the next queen of the winter court that might have remained the case. This was not so. Just moments after his grandmother fell to the ground from a fatal wound, Bain's mother emerged fully grown from his grandmother's womb.

The universe didn't only use his grandmother's blood to ensure his mother stayed alive when she should have died, but also to allow his grandmother to teach his mother all the things that she wished she could and than things she had not been aware she had wished to teach. The blood allowed a previous queen to train her successor, but more than that it allowed a mother to raise her daughter. Only a few minutes had passed for those standing outside the blood, but for those within the blood an entire lifetime had occurred. His father was the first to bend his knee to her when she emerged from her mother's womb. It was that action his mother told Bain, which clued her into the fact that his father was her knight. Those whom had known his parents couldn't deny they were madly in love. It was clear that they would do anything for each other, and they brought that same devotion to their children.

They loved Bain and his siblings with all their heart. He and his sibling grew up in a happy home, and when they came of age each of them swore fealty to one of the six court that made up their world. Bain ended up swearing fealty to his mother's. A fact that his father claimed didn't surprise him. Out of all their children, Bain had been the one to be closest to their mother. Time marched on until Bain's mother reign came to an end. Like the queen before her, his mother had been made aware the day was upon her long before it arrived, but unlike her own mother she had learned of the identity of her successor before she died. Her successor had been born inside the animal court and was only a baby when her identity was discovered but upon learning their daughter's destiny her parents had no problem handing their daughter over to another to raise.

His mother loved her successor like she was her own. She, also, realized that she wasn't the only one that shared this affection for her successor. She knew that her successor's own parents loved their daughter very much and made it very clear that in spite being from a different court that they were always welcome inside her court. As a parent she knew how heartbroken she would be if she was never allowed to see one of her children again and she would not be responsible for causing another parent that type of grief. Bain loved his mother's successor as well, but the affection they shared for each other blossomed to be more romantic in nature. His mother had been aware that this was the direction their relationship was going to take long before either of them were, and told them as much once they had decided to be together.

Bain's mother told him that she was clued into her successors romantic feelings towards him when she was a child because she would often get jealous and even downright vindictive towards those that Bain showed a desire for in either a romantic or sexual way. She became downright smug whenever he showed her attention rather than one of them. She never said anything during one of those moments, but it was crystal clear in the way she regarded those she saw as her competition for her affection. It was a look that said 'Ha, I won.' It was a few years after Bain and the next queen of the winter court decided to be together did death come for not only his mother but his father as well.

Several years earlier, his father went missing. Bain's mother searched everywhere for him. She knew that he wasn't dead. She would know if he was dead, but when she finally found him he was in a state worse than death. He had been captured by humans and locked inside a steel cage within one of their cities. Urban settings are quite toxic to fae. It will outright kill the weaker of their kind if they found themselves trapped within it for any extended period of time and it will drive the stronger insane. However, it wasn't just the toxin from being locked with a urban environment that had affected his father's mind. If it had been his father's mind would have returned to him once he found himself surrounded by others, or his kind or at the very least once he was brought before the very first of their kind.

It was unclear what the humans had done to him, but it was clear that it was more than locking him inside a steel cage. It became clear to his mother that the only cure for her beloved insanity was through death. She knew it had to be done, and yet at the same time it was not something she wanted to do. She did it, however. She gave her beloved the release he deserved and died of a broken heart only a few hours later. It was until many years later did Bain became aware of what happened to his father. It hadn't been the human's fault. They had not locked him inside a cage to conduct cruel experiments upon him, but rather to protect themselves against him. His mind had been affected by some kinda of disease and they thought perhaps they could cure him. They were, also, afraid to make his condition known to others of his kind. They feared that the fae would blame them for it.

Bain became aware of this condition when other of his kind fell victim to it---including his mother's successor. She didn't fall victim to it until many years after she accepted her title as queen of the winter court. She was a good queen--even if she was somewhat possessive of those whom she shared romantic feeling towards. However, that possessive nature of hers never brought serious harm to anyone until after the disease took a hold of her mind. Before the disease, Bain, her, and her knight all had a nice relationship going on. They had relationship with each other as well as other lovers. During those days, she wasn't so possessive that she saw everyone they shared romantic or sexual feeling towards as a threat that needed to be destroyed, and if she displayed any sense of jealously towards any affection they showed to anyone that wasn't her or each other it was quite easy to diffuse it.

This all changed once the disease took control of her mind. Any words anyone uttered to try to convince her of something that was contrary to what she believed went upon deaf ear, and often it would lead to the death of the speaker. Bain and her knight never suffered even the threat of this fate. She never believed--like with the others she had sentenced to death--that they spoke their words because they wished her harm or was trying to steal her throne. She believed that they believed it and that their minds were being poisoned by outside force--often it was those that showed them affection that she found unappropriated. Years passed with her like this, and both Bain and her knight knew that something had to been done. They even knew what needed to be done. They, however, didn't wish to kill her. They kept believing that they could cure her of this disease more than that they did not know what would happen to the winter court if they killed her before her successor was found.

Some part of Bain knew that is grandmother's successor had not been found before her death, but in his mind this was different. Their currant queen never speak about the end of her reign approaching. He believed that she had many years yet to rule and that if he killed her before the universe was ready for a new queen it would send everything into turmoil. That was until he discovered she had kept her successor imprisoned for years. She had been three when she had been locked within that cell and was twelve when Bain found her. She had no idea why she had been sealed away like that. She had no idea what crime she had committed to warrant such a punishment, but she did regard Bain as her savior when he freed her from her cell. He planned on bringing her to Irial for safe keeping, coming back to tell the currant queen's knight what he had discovered, and together the two of them doing what needed to be done.

Things, however, didn't go according to plan they were discovered trying to escape the winter court. Outraged, the currant queen demanded for her successors head. She shouted profanities at her, claiming that she was an evil tempest seeking to steal everything that belonged to her--including the man she loved. She became even more upset when Bain actively sought to defend her successor. She said that this was proof of the evil spell that she had cast upon him and she found herself torn between the belief that she had to kill the spell caster or him to break the spell. It was during this moment that her knight came upon them. Bain quickly informed him of the situation. Her knight approached her, taking her into his arms and soothed her to the best of his ability. He told her that it was going to be alright.

He told her that her pain was going to end than he turned his eyes towards Bain and told him to stab her. She knew what he intended and in spite any attempts upon her part he kept her secured tightly inside his embrace. He, also, knew that holding her as closely as he did only ensured his death, as well. Without hesitation, Bain did what he was asked and fell grief stricken to his knees beside the bodies of the two beings he had adored more than anything in the entire universe. He blamed himself for their death. His guilt was cause by more than the fact it had been his blade that ended his life. There was, also, the fact that if he had convinced the knight to kill her sooner that he might still be alive. He knew that this wasn't true. A knight rarely survived long without his queen. This lead him to believe that it was his failure to find a cure that lead to their death.

Bain sat there in that grief sicken state for the longest time and might have remained that way if his beloved successor hadn't hugged him from behind. She said nothing, but it was that single action that reminded him why he had done what he did. He might not have been the previous queen, but he had been close to the two that came before her. He didn't know as much about being queen of the winter court as her predecessor would but he did know enough that he could help her not go into the job blindly. More than that, he could protect her until her knight could be discovered. Some part of him knew that even after he was discovered that he would continue to protector her. A queen could never have too many defenders. It didn't take them long to discover her knight's identity. He was a boy not much older than she.

She ruled for many years, and cared for her a great deal but it was never in the same way he had for her predecessor. He never known how much this had bothered her until just a week before her own death. They had gotten into a disagreement over something minor. He doesn't remember what it was exactly and it probably doesn't matter. He just knew one moment they were arguing over this minor issue and the next she was yelling at him that he had always blamed her for her predecessor's death and that was why he couldn't allow himself to be with her. She proceeded to tell him that she wouldn't have to look upon her face for long because the end of her reign was upon them. He stood speechless for a few moments and than he told her to go fuck herself before taking off. By the time, he calmed down and returned she was dead.

Present

Like with her predecessor, Bain felt guilty. However, his guilt came from a different place. He did not hold himself responsible for her death in anyway. Where his guilt came from was the idea that the last words he uttered to her was filled with such venom that she died believe that he hated her or at the very least that she had been right that he had blamed her for her predecessors death. He had not. He had never blamed her. He had never allowed their relationship to blossom into anything more was because he did not want to fail someone else in the same way that he had failed the queen before her.

Shortly after her death, their new queen was discovered. She was a human woman born within the human kingdom of Adrealia. He had heard that she had decided to remain in Adrealia and build her kingdom there. Her people have begun to flock towards her--slowly due to the fact they are afraid how the people will respond to their presence. The supernatural have never been welcomed inside that human kingdom. But, the idea of not being near their queen is more painful than what the humans might to them. Even Bain feels the pull. However, he will resist it for the time being--hoping that by the time came that she will find herself surrounded by an inner circle of fae that his presence will not be noticed.

He does not want to come love a queen with every fiber of his being only to have her ripped away. Let another deal with that pain. He needs time to heal. Instead, he decided that he would travel around the world and see what interesting thing or people he can find out there. His most recent encounter was with a red dragon by the name of Kiana, whom decided to give him the nickname butterfly. He doesn't know what to think about the nickname. He want to refuse to accept it. In his mind, butterflies are creatures of summer or spring. He is not. He is a winter fae. Yet, at the same time there is no denying the compliment behind the nickname. She had told him that she liked butterflies and that she thought they were beautiful.
